Thru Street View

Artist Statement

ThruStreetView is a personal-impersonal digital narrative created only though using Google Street View. I created a site that tells a brief history of my life as Google would interpret it. The main page shows a picture of a “person” with links to each of the places that I’ve lived, accompanied by a memory that Google could never uncover. My site is designed to show how the internet can never show who I am because, although it may contain data such as gender, education, credit scores, vacation destinations, contacts and so on, it lacks the human element of memory rather than computer memory, which is determined by our senses. The goal of this site was to become as impersonal as the internet is in contrast to personal stories that draw attention to the senses, no matter the depth of detail the story entails.

I see this piece as a work in progress because I’d like to add more to the written aspect and also continue as new memories are made. I didn’t go into detail about my life in Boulder because it is still the present and has yet to morph into a memory.

Here is the link to my site which still has a few kinks that need to be fixed. Enjoy.
