Ryan Trecartin

After watching “Wayne’s World” and “K-Corea INC.K” my mind was exploding. I was trying to piece the videos together as if each was a short movie, but epically failing. Yes the colors, voices, costumes, and editing styles were completely like nothing I’d ever seen before, but I knew there was something interesting, deep within the videos.

After watching the two videos I decided to read the interview of Ryan Trecartin by James Franco. Ryan definitely impressed me multiple times during the interview. For instance, Ryan described the "terrifying aspects" of our culture and society as a symptom of something underlying and postive. He also mentions that peoples' morals are getting in the way of society becoming less human. At first, this seems like a no-brainer, but what Ryan is trying to say is that we need to become less human to be totally free. He wants to see a world where gender, sexuality, income, etc. are insignificant compared to one's personality. I would agree that this would be an ideal world but I'd say we have a long way to go.

When Ryan talked about identity coming from the internet, I was confused when he mentioned, "I think we’re slowly moving to a point where we will visually manifest at the speed of creative thought, where as we’re saying an idea we are also changing our body and changing our scenery and all these different extensions of language. I wonder how specific he was talking. What constitutes as a change in scenery? Does my scenery change when I move from one tab to the next while surfing the web?

Ryan's directing style is pretty interesting because he leaves a lot of the actors not knowing what character they are supposed to be playing. This type of acting is the exact opposite of Hollywood's acting where they actor or actress will go over the entire script again and again to fully become that character. Ryan's directing style shows that the actors don't need to know what the character is supposed to be like because they are the character. His films explore society and individual personalities so why would a real person need to act as another type of person in the society when there are multiple "actors" in each film.

I'm having a hard time putting this all into words, but hopefully you get the ideas in general for now and I will be adding more later.
